Pre-Raphaelite painter, watercolourist, and designer. Born in Birmingham. Educated at the Birmingham Government School of Design and Exeter College, Oxford. Moved to London in 1856 and began taking art lessons from Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Teacher at the Working Men’s College (1859-1861). Married Georgiana Macdonald (sister of Alice Kipling and Agnes Poynter) on 9 June 1860. Became an associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1864 and a member of the Royal Academy in 1885.
