Portrait and history painter. Born in London. Studied under the painter Philip Reinagle
and at the Royal Academy Schools. Travelled to France, Switzerland, Italy, Vienna,
and Dresden. Married Jane Reinagle (his former teacher’s daughter) on 17 September
1801. Elected a full academician of the Royal Academy in 1808 and exhibited there
frequently from 1801 to 1847. Became a professor of painting for the Academy in 1833.
