Actress, autobiographer, poet, dramatist, and novelist. Part of a large theatrical family, including her sister Adelaide Kemble, a famous singer of the period. Made her début in Covent Garden as Juliet. Married Pierce Butler on 7 June 1834. Abolitionist who, after living on her American husband’s plantations in North Carolina and Georgia for four months in 1838-39, wrote Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839 (1863). Separated from her husband for a considerable period of their marriage. Divorced in 1849. Returned her England in 1877, where she lived until her death. Author of the autobiographical works Journal of Frances Anne Butler (1835), Record of a Girlhood (1879), and Records of Later Life (1882), as well as the novel Far Away and Long Ago (1889).
