Painter and printmaker. Major nineteenth-century artist. Studied art in Paris from 1855, then moved to London in 1859 while continuing to make visits to Europe. Close friends with Algernon Charles Swinburne, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Oscar Wilde.
