A Twilight Sonnet.

A blush, a smile, a dusk sweet violet1
And hopes like flowing waters slip away,2
Away—away—through golden, green, and gray,3
Till love meets ocean-love or hearts forget.4
A withered flower that once was dewy-wet,5
A dim dusk purple gathered by the way,6
And treasured till the summer day—our day7
Was clouded by the shadow of regret.8
Twilight for dreams, the dun and dying glow9
Of flames that filled the home with love’s broad light ;10
After life’s storm, the wavering to and fro11
Of waters, the remembered youth and might ;12
And so from dreams to sleep, life’s puppet-show13
Stilled by the falling curtain of the night.14
