Ordained minister, professor of biblical criticism, and poet. Alternative signature: “D. Brown.” Studied at the University of Aberdeen (MA, 1821) and was ordained minister in 1826. Became professor of apologetics, exegesis, and church history at the Free Church College, Aberdeen (1857). Director of the National Bible Society of Scotland. Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church in 1885. Member of the New Testament revision company and took a conservative position (1880s). Author of several biblical commentaries.
