Poet, publisher, journalist, biographer, and editor. Pseudonym: “John Oldcastle.” Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear. Author of several biographies on John Henry Newman and Pope Leo XIII. Contributed to many periodicals including *Athenaeum*, the *Academy*, the *Illustrated London News*, and the *Nineteenth Century*. Converted to Catholicism in 1870. Married Alice Thompson (Alice Meynell) in 1877 and co-founded the periodical *The Pen* with her. Founder and editor of *Merry England*. Editor of the *Weekly Register*. Awarded the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1943.
