Essayist, critic, editor, poet. Writer for the *Liverpool Mercury*, chief reviewer for the *Liverpool Morning Albion*. Editor for the *Argus* from 1876 to 1878, when he became a writer for the *Spectator*. Took the post of literary editor for the *Manchester Examiner* in 1884. In 1893, started contributing to London periodicals such as *The Yellow Book*. In 1894, helped launch the journal the *New Age* and became editor for the *Illustrator...for the Sunday School Teacher and Bible Student*. Biographical information: *Yellow Nineties Online*.
