Actor, playwright, poet, and theatre manager. Born in London. Raised a regiment in support of William of Orange with his father (1688). Moved to London and joined the theatre company, United Company, in 1690. Married Catherine Shore on 6 May 1693. Acted over a hundred parts in his long career on the stage from 1690-1732. Began also working as a theatre manager in 1709 and became an influential figure in Drury Lane, particularly in in 1720s. Author of several plays including a re-written version of Shakespeare’s *Richard III*. Appointed Poet Laureate in 1730. Biographical information: *ODNB*. (JS, CC)
