Journalist, playwright, and poet. Alternative signatures: “Charles W. Brooks,” “C. Shirley Brooks,” and “Shirley Brooks” (which he used often in his later career). Pseudonym: “Epicurus Rotundus” (which he used in *Punch*). Born in London. Contributed *Ainsworth’s Magazine*, the *Illustrated London News*, the *Literary Gazette*, *Home News*, and *Punch* (which he edited from 1870 to his death). Became a member of the Society of Antiquaries in 1872. Closely connected with major literary figures including William Harrison Ainsworth and Samuel Laman Blanchard.
