Poet and historian. Born in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Son of the poet Thomas Warton
(c.1688-1745). Educated at Trinity College, Oxford, and elected perpetual fellow in
1753. Professor of Poetry at Oxford (1757-1767). Member of the London Society of Antiquaries
and the Literary Club. Became Poet Laureate in 1785. Close friends with Samuel Johnson.
Author of *The History of English Poetry, From the Close of the Eleventh to the Commencement
