Poet and philosopher. Son of a tenant farmer. Educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen
(later part of the University of Aberdeen). Schoolmaster at Fordoun, Beattie. Appointed
Professor of Moral Philosophy at Marischal College in 1760. Author of *The Judgement
of Paris* (1761), *The Minstrel* (1771, 1774), *Poems on Several Occasions* (1780).
