Poet, translator, and novelist. Pseudonym: “M. B.” Born in Calcutta, India. Lived
in Rome. Married painter Augustus H. Brotherton in August 1851, afterwards living
in Rome where they befriended the Brownings and Thackeray. In 1881 they moved to Freshwater,
Isle of Wight, living close to the Tennysons. Author of several volumes of poetry
including *Poems* (1855) and *Rosemary for Remembrance* (1895), and the novels *Arthur
