Father of the poet Richard Henry Dana, Jr. Educated at Harvard University and Newport,
Rhode Island, where he studied law. Married Ruth Charlotte Smith in 1813. Co-founder
and editor of the *North American Review* in 1814. Contributed poetry to the *New
York Review* and essays to the *Biblical Repository and Quarterly Observer*. Toured
and gave lectures on William Shakespeare (1839-1851). Author of several volumes of
poetry including *The Buccaneer and Other Poems* (1827). Friends with William Cullen
