Poet and Church of Scotland clergyman. Born in Auchtermuchty, Fife. Educated at the University of St Andrews and New College, Edinburgh. Ordained in 1877. Minister at Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh (1877-1909). Member of the Scottish Land and Labour League. Founded Scotland’s first Fabian Society in 1892. Co-founded the Glasgow branch of the Independent Labour Party. Married twice, Jane Scott White in July 1878 and Louisa Plymer Gibson in 1907.
