Born in Billinge, Lancashire. Educated at the Royal Institution in Liverpool. Secretary
of the Liverpool–Birmingham Grand Junction Railway. Contributed to *Tait’s Edinburgh
Magazine* and *Fraser’s Magazine*. Moved to London in 1845 and became the reviewer
of publications in foreign languages, such as Spanish, Italian, and German, for *The
