Poet, translator, novelist, and journalist. Pseudonym: “Hugh Foulis.” Born in Inveraray, Argyll. Spoke Gaelic. Moved to Glasgow in 1881 to work as a journalist, writing in particular for the *Glasgow Evening News* and becoming its editor in 1918.
