Poet, translator, dramatist, essayist, and surgeon. Began writing as a means to pay financial debts. Helped found the General Pharmaceutic Association in 1794. Editor of the *Critical Review*. Compiled a twelve-volume encyclopaedia, *Pantologia*, with Olinthus Gregory. Raised as a congregationalist, but converted to Unitarianism in the 1790s. Biographical information: *ODNB*. (KH)
