Richardson, David Lester (M)

b. 1801. d. 17 November 1865. Nationality: English.
Poet, editor, soldier, and professor of English. Alternative signature: “D. L. Richardson.” Baptized 15 February 1801. First went to India as a cadet and wrote poetry for the *Calcutta Journal* and published *Miscellaneous Poems* (1822). Returned to England in 1824 and founded the *London Weekly Review* and published *Sonnets and other Poems* (1825). Served in India as a captain from 1829 until he retired in 1833. Edited the *Bengal Annual* from 1830-1837, *Calcutta Monthly Journal*, and *Calcutta Literary Gazette* from 1834 to 1849. Became professor of English literature of the Hindu College at Calcutta in 1836 and promoted to principal in 1839. Continued to publish volumes of poetry in India. Returned to London in 1861 and became the editor of *Court Circular* and *Allen’s Indian Mail*. Biographical information: *ODNB*. (AC, CC)
