Parish priest, moderate liberal clergyman, poet, and Bishop of Ripon. Alternative signatures: “Bishop of Ripon” and “W. B. Ripon.” Appointed as a royal chaplain in 1879. Became bishop of Ripon 1884. Delivered the Bampton lectures at Oxford in 1887. Reputation as orator. Married twice, Harriet Charlotte in 1883 and Annie Maude in 1915.
