Born in Chertsey, Surrey. Graduated as a surgeon from Middlesex Hospital in 1838.
Set up a practice in London before turning to his literary interests. Contributed
to *Punch* and *Bentley’s Miscellany*. Became the drama critic of the *Illustrated
London News*. Co-editor of *The Man in the Moon* (1847-1849). Gave lectures about
his travels in Europe, Constantinople, Egypt, and China. Married Mary Lucy Keeley
