Prominent Chartist and medical doctor. Born c. 1814 in Wigtonshire, Scotland. Moved
to Lancashire and established a successful medical practice, becoming involved in
radical Chartism after researching ill health caused by factory work. Imprisoned for
sedition 1839-1840 and 1848-1850. Author of *The Charter: What It Means! The Chartists:
What They Want!* (1845). Emigrated to Australia just before his death. Biographical
