Diplomat and poet. Began working for the East India Company in 1805 and travelled there several times for diplomatic missions. Travelled to China in 1816. Elected MP for Boston, Lincolnshire and was made deputy colonial secretary and commissioner of stamps in Cape Town in 1820. Married Louisa Amelia Wilson on 10 June 1820. Returned to England in 1824.
