Poet, novelist, illustrator, and critic. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Friends with Henry Alford, William Brookfield, Richard Monckton Milnes, Edward Fitzgerald, and Alfred Tennyson. Acquainted with Charles Dickens. Married Isabella Gethin Shawe on 20 August 1836. Author of *Vanity Fair* (1847) and *Barry Lyndon* (1844). Became a member of the Garrick Club (1833).
