Magazine editor, playwright, and poet. Contributed to *Bentley’s Miscellany* while Charles Dickens, with whom he became close friends, was editor. Also contributed to *New Sporting Magazine*. Helped found *Punch* and served as editor for most of his life. Also helped found *Illustrated London News*, the Christmas editions of which he edited. Briefly edited both *London Journal* and *The Field*. Author of several poetry volumes including *Prose and Verse* (1852). Biographical information: *ODNB*. (JS)
