Linton, William James (M)

b. 7 December 1812. d. 29 December 1897. Nationality: English. VIAF.
Poet, journalist, polemicist, editor, painter, wood engraver. Pseudonyms: “L.,” “Pot-Pourri,” “Abel Reid.” Married Laura Wade on 21 October 1837, although she died a few months later of tuberculosis, and shortly afterwards he began a common-law relationship with Laura’s sister, Emily. In 1856 Emily also died of tuberculosis, in 1856, and on 24 March 1858 Linton married the writer Eliza Lynn. They separated when Linton emigrated to the United States in 1867. Editor of *The National: A Library for the People* (1839), *The English Republic*, *Pen and Pencil*, and co-founder of *The Leader*. Published poetry volumes, including *Claribel and Other Poems* (1875), *Love-Lore* (1887). Also published books on the history and technique of wood engraving. Edited *Poetry of America* (1878) and (with R. H. Stoddard) the 5-volume *English Verse* (1884). Biographical information: *ODNB*. (AC)
