of India from 1858-1874. Married Sarah Monckton on 14 May 1835. Befriended and patronized
G. F. Watts, through whom their house became a centre of artistic and literary culture
in London, hosting Tennyson, Browning, and Thackeray, Du Maurier, Ruskin, and Burne-Jones,
