Poet and essayist. Née Laighton. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Educated at home and at the Mount Washington Female Seminary. Married Levi Lincoln Thaxter in 1851. Travelled around Europe for 6 months from 1880-1881. Contributed to *Atlantic Monthly*, the *Century*, *Harper’s*, the *Independent*, *Our Young Folks*, *St. Nicholas*, and *Youth’s Companion*.
