Prominent playwright and poet. Born in London. Married Anne Lewis on 14 November 1594. Author of *Every Man in his Humour* (1594), in which Shakespeare had a lead role. Many of his plays were performed at court. Imprisoned for killing an actor in a duel (1598). Briefly converted to Catholicism (1598-1610). Author of the poetry volumes *Epigrams* (1616) and *The Forest* (1616). Became Britain’s poet laureate in 1616. Friends with William Drummond, John Donne, and Richard Corbett.
