Poet (writing in English and Scots) and novelist. Campaigned for women’s education
and legal rights. Pseudonym: “Isa.” Née Craig. Married her cousin John Knox in May
1866, after which she used the signatures “Isa Craig Knox” and “Mrs. Knox.” Prolific
periodical poet, beginning her career by publishing poems in the *Scotsman*. Edited
*The Argosy* (1865-1867). Closely associated with the Langham Place Group and friends
with Bessie Rayner Parkes. Member of the Portfolio Society and a staff member of the
*English Woman’s Journal*. Assistant Secretary for the Promotion of of Social Science.
Won first prize in the 1859 Burns Competition. Edited *Poems: An Offering to Lancashire*
(1863). Author of *Poems by Isa* (1856), *Duchess Agnes, a Drama, and Other Poems*
