Poet, hymn writer, translator, and United Presbyterian church minister. Born in Stirlingshire, Scotland. Educated at the University of Glasgow, University of Edinburgh, and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany. Ordained in 1843. Author of *Hosanna* (1854).
