Poet and soldier. Alternative signature: “F. B. Doveton.” Born in Exeter, Devon, and
later lived at Karsfield, Torquay, Devon. Joined the Royal Canadian Rifles in 1861
and the Army Control Depot in 1868 until retirement in 1871. *Chambers’s Journal*
ledger entry for his poem “On the Bridge,” published 21 July 1883, gives his address
as Grange Lodge, 10 Grange Gardens, Eastbourne (NLS Dep 341/369). Author of *Snatches
of Song* (1880), *Sketches in Prose and Verse* (1886), and *Songs Grave and Gay* (1893).
