Children’s writer, poet, translator, and animal welfare campaigner. Pseudonym: “Jean
Boncœur.” Born in Birmingham. Author of several children’s books including *Karl and
the Six Little Dwarfs* (1863). Championed animal welfare including by teaching children,
through stories, to respect animals, for example *The Four Cats of the Tippertons
and Other Stories about Animals* (1881). Contributed to the *Birmingham Daily Post*
and *Animal’s Friend*. In 1876 she established a prize awarded to school children
in Birmingham for the best essays on animal welfare. She never married. Biographical
