Diplomat, poet, journalist, and novelist. Pseudonym: “W. W. F. S.”. Alternative signature: “W. W. F. Synge.” Educated largely abroad. Worked for the Foreign Office from June 1846. Began his career abroad as a diplomat in Washington, and worked also the Sandwich Islands and Central America (where he met Anthony Trollope). Married Henrietta Mary Dewar on 27 January 1853.
