Poet and playwright. Born in Ednam, Roxburghshire. Educated at the College of Edinburgh and Divinity Hall, Edinburgh, with the intention of becoming a minister. Moved to London in 1725 to pursue a literary career. Travelled to France and Italy (1730-1733). Publications include *The Seasons* (1726-1730). Author of words to *Rule Britannia* (1740).
