Novelist, poet, translator, and biographer. Née Wilson. Born in Wallyford, Scotland. Educated at home by her mother. Author of *Passages in the Life of Margaret Maitland* (1849). Married Francis (Frank) Oliphant (her cousin) on 4 May 1852. Became a reviewer for *Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine* in 1852 and contributed serial novels to the publication. Biographer for Edward Irving (1862), Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1883), and Queen Victoria (1890), among others. Friends with David Macbeth Moir and George Wilson. Biographical information: *ODNB*.
