Poet, children’s author, and teacher. Born in Massachusetts. Sister of Dora Reade
Goodale. Co-authored poetry with her younger sister from a young age, including contributions
to *St. Nicholas* and the volume of poetry *Apple Blossoms: Verses of Two Children*
(1878). Employed as a teacher in the Indian department at the Hampton Institute in
Virginia. Contributed to the school newspaper *Southern Workman* and developed an
interest in American Indigenous peoples. Travelled through the Sioux reservation,
Dakota territory (1885). Government teacher, then superintendent, in schools in the
Dakota Territory (1886-1890). Married Dr. Charles Alexander Eastman, a Sioux member,
in 1891. Edited her husband’s memoir *Indian Boyhood* (1902). Biographical information:
