Poet, novelist, and translator. Born in Birmingham to a Quaker family. Educated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Married Sophia Pemberton on 24 April 1799. Author of the epistolary novel *Edmund Oliver* (1789) and several volumes of poetry including *Desultory Thoughts in London* (1821). Translator of *Metamorphoses* by Ovid and several plays by Vittorio Alfieri. Close friends with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and their circle. Biographical information: *ODNB*. (CC)
