Poet, editor, and Free Church minister. Born in Lumsden, Aberdeenshire. Educated at
the University of Aberdeen. Retired from the ministry in 1885 due to ill health. Editor
of *The Expositor* (from 1884), founder of the *British Weekly* (in 1886), and founding
editor of the *The Bookman* (in 1891). Chief literary adviser to Hodder and Stoughton.
