College, London. Travelled in Italy (1853-1854). Married twice, Jane Emma Borradaile
in 1860 and Isabel Mary Hewlett in February 1865. Original member of the Metaphysical
Society (1869-1881). Became a fellow at the Royal Institute of British Architects
in 1870. Editor of the *Contemporary Review* (1870-1877). Founding editor of *The
Nineteenth Century* in 1877. Made Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in
