Novelist, translator, playwright, essayist, editor, and lexicographer. Because of the calendar change in 1752, he celebrated his birthday on September 18. Began work on *The Dictionary* in 1746 which became the standard dictionary authority. Regular acquaintance of Thomas Warton, Thomas Percy, and Joshua Reynolds. Founder of the Literary Club in 1764.
