College, Oxford. Married twice: Charlotte Grenfell on 3 October 1849 and Henrietta
Elizabeth Warre on 12 September 1861. Biographer of Thomas Carlyle. Editor of *Fraser’s
Magazine* (1860-1874). Travelled extensively, including to southern Africa, Norway,
Australian colonies, New Zealand, and the West Indies. Member of the Athenaeum Club
and original member of the Breakfast Club. Author of his autobiographical novel *Shadows
