to German parents. Father was valet to the Duke of Sussex, and then clerk to Sir Richard
Mayne (Chief Commissioner of Police). Suffered from tuberculosis. Educated at Leigh’s
Schools of Art. Contributed to *Punch* (May 1864-1870), *The Illustrated London News*,
*The Illustrated Midland News*, and *The Sunday Magazine*. Lived in Epsom, Surrey,
and London. Illustrator of *Stories told to a Child* by Jean Ingelow. Author of *The
