Pre-Raphaelite illustrator and painter. Born in Westminster. Educated at the Government School of Design at Somerset House and the Royal Academy Schools. Married Tryphena Foord on 26 November 1855. Founding member of the Hogarth Club (1858). Friends with George MacDonald, with whom he collaborated extensively. Book illustrations include Thomas Hughes’s *Tom Brown’s School Days* (1869) and Christina Rossetti’s *Speaking Likenesses* (1874). Biographical information: *ODNB*. (CC)
