Painter, illustrator, designer, and arts administrator. Born in Paris. Studied the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with James McNeill Whistler, George du Maurier, and Thomas Reynolds Lamont. Returned to England in 1860. Contributed to *London Society* and the *Bible Gallery* (1880) by the Dalziel brothers. Exhibited at the Royal Academy and Dudley Gallery. Married Agnes Macdonald (sister of Alice Kipling and Georgiana Burne-Jones) on 9 August 1866. Slade professor at University College, London (1871-1875). Appointed director of the National Art Training School in 1875. Elected Royal Academician in 1876. Director of the National Gallery (1894-1904), President of the Royal Academy (1896-1918).
