Foster, Myles Birket (M)

b. 4 February 1825. d. 27 March 1899. Nationality: English.
Watercolourist, painter, illustrator, draughtsman, and engraver. Born in North Shields, Northumberland to a Quaker family. Worked as an engraver for the *Illustrated London News*. Travelled to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria in 1852. Contributed to *Christmas with the Poets* (1851) by Henry Vizetelly which was displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Illustrator for many prominent poets including Sir Walter Scott and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Travelled around Scotland, Wales, and the Lake Country to produce illustrations for a series *Picturesque Guides*. Married twice, Anne Spence on 13 August 1850 and Frances Watson (sister of John Dawson Watson) on 25 August 1864. Became a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1862. Visited Italy several times from 1866-1876. Travelled to France, Spain, and Italy in 1887. Elected honorary member of the Royal Berlin Academy in 1874. Biographical information: Wood 161, *ODNB*.
