Studied at the Graham Art School in Brooklyn. Married Marian Thompson in 1862. Exhibited at the American Watercolour Society. Specialized in landscapes. Contributed to *Harper’s Monthly*, Harper’s Weekly*, *Century*, and *St. Nicholas*. Illustrator of the “Picturesque America” series (and its successors “Picturesque Europe,” and “Picturesque Palestine, Sinai, and Egypt”) for *Appleton’s Journal*. Biographical information: *DLB*.
