Marine painter. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. Worked as s shipbuilder for his father before pursuing art as a career. Exhibited at the Northumberland Institution for the Promotion of the Fine Arts. Specialized in marine subjects and the landscape of Newcastle changing during the industrial revolution. Married Mary Sweet on 20 March 1826. Moved to London in 1846. Contributed illustrations of the Crimean War for the *Illustrated London News* (1855).
