Poet, translator, short story writer, novelist, and journalist. Born at Workington Hall, Cumberland. Educated at Rossall School in Fleetwood, Lancashire. Author of the translated book of poems *Echoes from French Poets (1870), as well as a translation of Baudelaire’s *Study of the Life and Writings of Poe* (1872). Moved to India in 1876 to become assistant editor, and then editor and proprietor, of the Bombay based *Times of India*. Biographical information: *ODNB*. (AC)
