Poet (often writing in the Dorset dialect) and philologist. Father was a farmer. Worked as solicitor’s clerk from age 13, and then as a school teacher from 1823. Married Julia Miles on 9 July 1827. Ordained as a Church of England minister in 1847. Awarded a civil list pension in 1861. Author of poetry volumes including *Poems of Rural Life in the Dorset Dialect* (1844).
